No other fish is more symbolic of Portuguese History than tuna. Afonso III, the first king of Portugal, reserved tuna as a monopoly for the crown in the 13th century. Vila Real de Santo António was home to over 50 fish processing factories and set the price for fish in the rest of Europe. Due to overfishing, the number of tuna caught declined year by year and attempts were made to create quotas for Bluefin tuna fishing. It is estimated that 90% of Atlantic Bluefin tuna has disappeared and the species is in danger of becoming extinct.
This new concept of diving aims to raise awareness for the future of this wonderful species while amping up the fun. You will have the unique opportunity to dive with large schools of tuna and other fish in their natural habitat and observe these stunning creatures up close.
