“What is the meaning of true luxury? For us, it's a combination of authenticity, simplicity and soul.
Once upon a time, when the hotel was nothing more than a construction site (but already kept us very busy), we came together in a quiet moment of rest after one of those seemingly endless work days. The doers and the optimists, the aesthetes and the free thinkers, the pragmatics and the visionaries. The improvisers and the improvers. The smilers and the storytellers. A fellowship of people who worked their hearts out and squeezed every creative juice in their mind to bring the Grand Dame back to life. We sat, with a Martini in our hands, in the hall that would one day become the Grand Salon and — strange as it may seem — tried to listen to the walls, feeling the pulse of this ‘being’ who is the soul behind Grand House. What would ‘she’ be like, our Grand Dame? Her attitude? Her story? Her style? Style is a manner, isn’t it? Or manner makes style…?
‘She’ was Grand. ‘She’ was glamorous, bringing together the affluent and the influencers. ‘She’ was one of its kind, the first luxury hotel south of the Tagus River, marking the beginning of tourism in the south of Portugal. With its inauguration in 1926, the Hotel Guadiana set new standards and made its way as an icon in Portuguese hospitality.
As you know, we like to think of our house as a Grand Dame. Elegant, timeless, a woman of the world, eloquent, free-spirited, and devoted to the finer things in life. But even if she puts her feet in fabulous shoes, her footprint should not leave any long-term traces. At least ecologically.

Being a pet friendly hotel, we have a very special Junior Butler: GRAND. The Portuguese Water Dog is not only the ambassador of our pet-friendly Hotel. No, she is also our good soul and all-round Very Good Girl. She works in the customer service, where her affectionate, social nature makes her the perfect fit for this role.
