Once upon a time, when the hotel was nothing more than a bustling construction site (yet already keeping us very busy), we gathered together for a quiet moment of respite after one of those seemingly endless workdays. Here were the doers and optimists, the aesthetes and free thinkers, the pragmatists and visionaries. We had the improvisers and improvers, the smilers and storytellers—a fellowship of individuals who poured their hearts and creative juices into reviving the Grand Dame.
We sat in what would one day become the Grand Salon, Martini glasses in hand, and – strangely enough – tried to listen to the walls, feeling the pulse of the ‘being’ that is the soul behind the Grand House. What would our Grand Dame be like? Her attitude? Her story? Her style? After all, isn’t style a manner – or is it that manner makes style?
She was Grand. She was glamorous, attracting the affluent and influencers alike. She was one of a kind—the first luxury hotel south of the Tagus River, pioneering tourism in southern Portugal. Inaugurated in 1926, Hotel Guadiana set new standards and established itself as an icon in Portuguese hospitality.
As you know, we like to envision our establishment as a Grand Dame: elegant, timeless, worldly, eloquent, free-spirited, and devoted to life’s finer pleasures. Yet, even as she dons fabulous shoes, her footprint should not leave any lasting ecological traces.

Being a pet friendly hotel, we have a very special Junior Butler: GRAND. The Portuguese Water Dog is not only the ambassador of our pet-friendly Hotel. No, she is also our good soul and all-round Very Good Girl. She works in the customer service, where her affectionate, social nature makes her the perfect fit for this role.
